OpenAI has switched on ads inside ChatGPT for India's 330M+ users, and self-serve access opened September 4 with daily budgets from ₹725. Here's exactly how targeting, bidding and setup work — and how D2C brands should test the channel before the auction heats up.

Ads are now live inside ChatGPT in India
In late August 2026, OpenAI switched on advertising in ChatGPT for Indian users — one of its largest markets, with over 330 million monthly users. If your customers research products by asking an AI instead of typing into Google, there is now a paid placement waiting at that exact moment. And from September 4, any business can buy it directly through a self-serve Ads Manager, with daily budgets starting at just ₹725.
This is the biggest new performance channel to open in India since retail media. Here is everything you need to know — who sees the ads, how the platform works, what it costs, and how to run your first campaign.
Who actually sees ChatGPT ads in India
Logged-in users aged 18+ on the Free plan and the ₹399/month Go plan
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers stay ad-free
No ads next to sensitive topics — health, mental health, politics and regulated categories are excluded
Since the overwhelming majority of India's ChatGPT base sits on Free and Go, the addressable audience is enormous. These are also high-intent moments: people comparing products, planning purchases, and asking for recommendations in plain language.
How the ads appear
There are no banners and no pop-ups. When a conversation is commercially relevant, a clearly labelled sponsored card appears below ChatGPT's answer, visually separated from the AI-generated response. OpenAI has been explicit that ads do not influence what the model says — the answer is generated first, the ad is matched separately. For advertisers, that means you are buying adjacency to intent, not a recommendation.
Targeting: context hints, not keywords
This is where ChatGPT ads genuinely differ from Google and Meta. There is no keyword bidding and no interest-based audience builder. Instead, you supply context hints — descriptions of the conversations where your product belongs. Think "users comparing protein supplements for muscle gain" rather than bidding on the keyword "whey protein."
The system then matches your hints against the live conversation's intent, along with signals from your landing page, ad copy and targeting selections, and runs a relevance-weighted second-price auction. Relevance quality matters as much as bid — a well-written context hint set beats a bigger budget with vague hints.
Additional targeting layers now available:
Geo-targeting with location exclusions
Custom audiences — upload hashed email or phone lists to include or exclude customers (minimum 25,000 matched users, so this suits brands with a real database)
Bid multipliers at the ad-group level for higher-value segments
Product feed campaigns — your existing Google Shopping or Meta catalog feed can be mapped to OpenAI's spec, so D2C brands are not starting from zero
Bidding, budgets and costs
Objectives: Reach (CPM — pay per 1,000 impressions) or Clicks (CPC — pay per valid click)
Minimum daily budget in India: ₹725 — there is no large minimum commitment for self-serve accounts
Suggested starting CPC: OpenAI recommends $3–5 per click globally (roughly ₹265–440); expect Indian auction prices to settle lower as inventory scales, the way every platform's India CPCs eventually do
Auction: relevance-weighted second-price — you pay just above the next eligible bid, weighted by how relevant your ad is
Measurement and privacy
Conversion tracking covers purchases, sign-ups and leads after ad engagement, with conversion-based bidding now rolling out. Reporting is aggregated only — you see campaign-level performance, never individual conversations. Advertisers get no access to chat history, memories or personal details, and OpenAI does not serve ads to users it identifies as minors. If your attribution stack leans on user-level data, plan for a more Apple-era, aggregate view of this channel.
How to set up your ChatGPT Ads account (step by step)
Everything runs through ads.openai.com. Gather these before you start, because the flow locks certain settings permanently:
Legal business name (exactly as it appears on your incorporation/GST paperwork)
Business website URL
A clean square brand logo — this appears as the favicon next to your ads
Industry classification
Billing address, invoice email and payment details
Country, currency and timezone decided in advance — these cannot be changed after you confirm them
Step 1 — Create the account. Sign in at ads.openai.com with an OpenAI account. Only one person per business should create the advertiser account — that person becomes the account owner and invites everyone else. Duplicate accounts from multiple teammates is the most common setup mistake, and the creator's email is where approval notifications land.
Step 2 — Enter business and account details. Business name, website, logo and industry, then country, currency and timezone, plus accepting OpenAI's advertising terms. Choose the country and currency you actually plan to bill and report in — they are locked after this screen.
Step 3 — Identity verification via Persona. OpenAI uses Persona (the same verification vendor as Coinbase and Square) to run business eligibility and sanctions checks. Completing the Persona flow does not instantly unlock the account — applications sit in a rolling review queue, and OpenAI has flagged that high signup volume means verification can take days. You get an email once you are approved.
Step 4 — Finish account info. Once approved, go to Settings → Account info and set your Account name and Logo exactly as you want them displayed — this is the advertiser name and icon users see on your ad unit. You cannot serve ads until this step is complete.
Step 5 — Set up billing. Add business name, invoice delivery email, billing address and a payment method. Ads will not serve without billing complete.
Step 6 — Invite your team. Three roles are available: Admin (full access), Member (create and manage campaigns) and View only. Agencies should note that each advertiser needs its own account, so multi-client teams manage multiple accounts.
One practical tip: since approval takes days, use the waiting period to write your context hints, prepare your product feed and build campaigns offline via the bulk upload template — so you launch the day the approval email lands, not two weeks later.
How to set up your first campaign
Step 1 — Get access: Sign up for ChatGPT Ads Manager (self-serve access opened for Indian advertisers on September 4, 2026) and complete advertiser verification
Step 2 — Choose an objective: Reach for awareness, Clicks for performance; D2C brands should start with Clicks
Step 3 — Write context hints: Describe 5–10 conversation scenarios where your product is the natural answer. Be specific — "first-time parents researching organic baby skincare" outperforms "skincare"
Step 4 — Connect your feed: If you sell physical products, adapt your Google Shopping or Meta catalog feed to OpenAI's spec inside Ads Manager
Step 5 — Set budget and bids: Start at ₹725–2,000/day with a conservative CPC cap, then let a week of data tell you where relevance is landing
Step 6 — Measure and iterate: Wire up conversion tracking on day one; the auction increasingly rewards advertisers feeding it conversion signals
Should Indian brands jump in now?
More than 50 brands launched campaigns in the first wave, and WPP and Omnicom signed on as OpenAI's first agency partners — the big money is already testing. But the self-serve door with a ₹725/day floor means this is not a big-brand-only channel. Early platforms consistently reward first movers: less auction competition, cheaper learning, and benchmark data your competitors will not have for months.
Our take: treat ChatGPT ads as a high-intent discovery layer, not a Google Search replacement. Budget it like an experiment — 5–10% of performance spend — and judge it on assisted conversions and new-customer quality, not last-click ROAS in week one. The brands that learn how context hints behave in their category now will own this channel when the auction heats up.
