AI-referred shoppers are converting better than organic search

What Changed

Shopify's Q1 2026 commerce data shows referral sessions from AI assistants growing more than eightfold year over year across its storefronts, with AI-referred orders up close to thirteenfold. Those visitors convert at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search on product detail pages and carry around 14% higher average order values.

Attribution is the weak point. A meaningful share of AI-driven traffic arrives with the referrer stripped and lands in direct, and Google does not separately attribute AI Mode or AI Overviews referrals in GA4. Reported AI share is almost certainly an undercount.

Why It Matters

The conversion numbers are the headline, but the attribution problem is the part that will actually cost you. If AI referrals are landing in direct because the referrer was stripped, the channel looks smaller than it is, and any budget argument built on GA4's reported AI share is built on an undercount.

Set up a custom channel group with a regex covering the known AI referrers before you attempt to size the channel. Then look at whether unattributed direct traffic has grown out of step with brand search — that gap is your rough proxy for the missing volume.

The behavioural point matters more than the numbers for anyone running a D2C site. AI-referred visitors frequently land directly on a product page having never seen the homepage, the brand story, or any of the trust-building that usually precedes an add-to-cart. Every product page has to carry the full weight on its own: proposition, proof, shipping and returns, and a reason to believe. Most Indian D2C product pages currently assume the visitor arrived with context.
