Shopify turned agentic commerce on by default for every store

What Changed

Shopify's Spring '26 Edition shipped on 17 June 2026 with more than 150 updates. The Universal Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Google as an open standard for agentic commerce, is enabled by default for Shopify merchants rather than requiring a custom build.

Shopify Catalog structures and syndicates product data to ChatGPT, Copilot, the Shop app and other AI surfaces with no extra apps or manual feeds. Merchants with eligible products are included by default.

Note: this release is officially the Spring '26 Edition. A number of third-party write-ups have referred to it as Summer '26.

Why It Matters

If your client is on Shopify with eligible products, syndication to AI surfaces is already happening. That is a different situation from a channel you can decide to launch: the decision in front of you is whether the product data being read is good enough to represent the brand, not whether to participate.

Open the Agentic section in the admin and look at what is actually surfacing. The inputs that matter to an agent are the ones brands routinely deprioritise on their own site — complete attributes, accurate availability, clear returns and shipping terms, structured variant data. Thin product descriptions that a human shopper forgives because the photography carries the page will not carry an agent comparison.

Temper expectations on the transaction side for India specifically. In-chat checkout coverage is concentrated in US surfaces and participating retailers; the realistic near-term value here is discovery and consideration, not purchases completing inside an assistant. Treat it as an SEO-adjacent data hygiene project this quarter rather than a revenue channel.
